Solider Aust Defence Force – Shaine Stephen

My name is Shaine and I have been operating a Hire A Hubby franchise for 3 years in a Metro Area. Previous to Hire A Hubby I was a soldier within the Australian Defence Force, and was looking for a business opportunity which offered variety and the chance to learn new skills.

I found Hire A Hubby to fit all my requirements, the support you receive from the network and Head Office is outstanding. Having had no previous business experience, I found the training you receive is beneficial, and educates you on all aspects of how to successfully operate the franchise. You are constantly challenged and improving your skills, if you don’t know how to complete a job there are always people within your network to seek advice from. The freedom and flexibility offered by being part of the franchise to be extremely important to me & my family, as is working with people to help solve their maintenance problems.

Banking and Finance

Banking & Finance – Terry Morris

After 30 years in the banking & finance business in both private and public sectors, it was time to reinvent myself and set some new challenges in my life and I needed to find a career that would provide a better work/life balance and enable me to be my own boss. I looked at a gardening franchise but convinced myself that I did not want to be mowing lawns for the rest of my days.

I attended a HAH introduction night and after much consideration signed up. I was impressed with the professionalism of the franchise and what they had to offer in relation to training and support both at start up and ongoing. I have been a franchisee for 2 years now and have no regrets. It hasn’t been easy but I went into the venture with my eyes wide open and realised that you only get out of a business what you are willing to put into it.

I have a comprehensive list of tradesmen at my disposal and at all times sell the business as a one stop shop. I have made many great contacts along the way and have managed to build up a viable franchise that is both rewarding and profitable. My future goals are to continue steadily building the business whilst expanding my skill sets.

Corporate Banking – Neil Gibbins

Neil has been a Hire A Hubby since 2003. He learned his practical skills renovating his own properties and as a volunteer handyman.

Neil’s business career lead him into corporate banking that resulted in long hours and a large amount of international travel. As a father of two young boys who were missing out on time with their Dad, Neil made the decision to go into business doing something he loved that was close to home.

Neil now employs a team to help him manage his booming franchise.

By combining his business knowledge with great customer service skills, Neil has become a multiple Franchisee of the year winner, proving no matter what your background, anyone with good handyman and business skills can be a successful Hire A Hubby.


Store Manager – Peter Cuthbert

I had been working as a store manager in a fast food chain for eight years, before I bought my franchise with Hire A Hubby. Prior to that, I managed a family business in engineering/toolmaking and spent five years as a hardware industry representative.

I joined Hire A Hubby for a change of lifestyle. I wanted to be more flexible for my children. Having always been involved in DIY around the house, including repairs, painting, tiling, and wallpapering, as well as landscaping, paving, decking, and fencing, I thought Hire A Hubby was something I could make a go of and the start up costs where affordable.

I enjoy the variety and flexibility of working my franchise with Hire A Hubby, as well as the support I receive from neighbouring franchisees.

Information Technology (IT) – Rein & Dianne van Vliet

Dianne and I joined Hire A Hubby in 2010. I was from an Information Technology background, having spent 19 years with Queensland Treasury, the last 10 at Director Level. Dianne had been working for 15 years in Information Management, also with Queensland Treasury.

At that point, we decided that we wanted to take more control over our work and futures. We wanted to work on something we could build together.

My father was a marine engineer/engineer and an excellent handyman. I am self-taught and, before Hire A Hubby, I had renovated a 1930’s Queenslander cottage. So, we chose Hire A Hubby because this type of business best suited our skills and experience.

We enjoy being part of a network of business owners. There is the opportunity to learn from other like-minded businesses and to benefit from the collective experience of the network. There is also the opportunity to contribute to the success of others.

Sales and Marketing

National Sales Manager Commercial Property – Luke Rogan

Prior to Hire a Hubby I had been National Sales manager for a large commercial property developer. I had renovated many of my own properties and decided that this was what I wanted to do but needed a business that was scalable. Hire a Hubby allowed me to be a Man in a Van but also provided the ability to grow into a multi person operation. I had looked at a number of franchises but when I researched Hire a Hubby I liked the professional approach, the assistance and the support.

Hub e-Connect is the IT package they provide to manage your work and it is excellent, allowing me to constantly monitor how my business is going. Joining the organisation allows me to give back to the community in supporting local kinders and schools whilst at the same time promoting my business.


Retail Liquor – Ross Veitch

I have been with Hire a Hubby for over three years, prior to that I worked in retail liquor. I had been looking into various options because whilst I enjoyed retail there was little money and lack of family time due to shifts. I have always been good with my hands so the type of work that HAH covered suited me.

Having two sons allowed them to also work with me and become involved with the business. Being my own boss gives me the freedom and flexibility to meet family commitments and to enjoy my golf days.

Marketing/Police Service – Alan Denby

I’ve had two working careers so far. The first is in the police service for fourteen years and the second in the marketing division for Optus, also for fourteen years. I have always been a practical and hands on person and have renovated several houses including the addition of a second story on my last house, as an owner/builder.

I wanted to get out and “do my own thing” and investigated my options with several franchise businesses. Hire A Hubby was the winner for me because of the match with my skills and interests as well as the quality of the Hire A Hubby brand and personal values of the hubbies that I met when considering the opportunity.

The Trades

Truck Driver/Supervisor & Mechanic – Cameron Saywell

Before I joined Hire A Hubby, I worked in transport for seven years, two as a driver and five in Supervisorial roles. My trade background is as a Mechanic, where I spent almost 10 years working on everything from lawn mowers to road transport vehicles.

My father was a carpenter and my mother has bought and renovated properties since the late 1980’s. I worked alongside them with this. Since buying my first home in 2002, I have renovated the kitchen, bathroom, laundry, and lounge room. After the 2011 Brisbane flood I had to repair my home, as over a metre of water went through. After the 2013 Bundaberg floods, I again had to completely repair a house my wife and I had bought as it was nearly swept off its stumps and the garage was half washed away.

After a sudden death in the family just over 12 months ago, I re-evaluated what I was doing and where I wanted to end up. My job at that time was, if anything, going backward. I chose Hire A Hubby because of the variety of work that I can carry out. It is the type of work I want to do.

The opportunity to own a territory very close to where I live and not have to commute to and from Brisbane was a huge incentive.

Hire A Hubby allows me to really be my own boss, I can work as hard as I want, if I want to be a one man operation, I can. If I want to grow my business and employ people, I can do that as well. All the other Hubbies I have met are quick to help with technical info, contact details, and words of encouragement.

The brand recognition helps open doors that I do not believe I would have been able to do on my own.

Fitter Machinist – Richard Robinson

Before Hire a Hubby I was a fitter machinist for 16 years. I always wanted to be my own manager and many of my friends recommended that I do my own thing but I liked the idea of the franchise model. The back up and support that Hire a Hubby offered is excellent. You are constantly challenged and if I don’t know how to complete a job I know I can rely on the office support staff and my neighbouring franchisees to help me out.

It’s my business and I see it as a long term investment for my future and Hire a Hubby has given me the opportunities to achieve this.

Carpenter & Tank Commander in the Defence Force – Gareth Guy

I started with Hire a Hubby in September 2012 and since then things have not stopped, requiring me to take on two employees within a very short period.

Prior to Hire a Hubby I was a carpenter for 10 years and before that in the defence forces as the commander of a small tank. I always wanted to work for myself but didn’t think I could do it on my own. Hire a Hubby gives me the support and the work generation opportunities to allow me to succeed and to grow my business even further.

Air Conditioning Industry – John Alligiannis

I was in the air conditioning industry for over fourteen years however in the last couple of years, the work became monotonous with a lot of travel which proved increasingly annoying. I needed a new kick start in life with a more interesting and better paying job to give me the motivation to wake up in the morning. After receiving a less than impressive pay rise ($1 extra an hour) after ten years of hard labour, I took all my long service leave and gave my boss my two weeks notice then left happily.

I joined Hire A Hubby after a lot of thought and also attending the information workshops. Talking to the Franchise Manager and going out on the road with current Hire A Hubby guys helped me come to the decision that this move would be right for me.

Hire A Hubby is a franchise in which you are not competing against others in the network. You are actually working together as a team, which provides a family type of atmosphere where wives and children are very much a part of it. Also the back up that is provided by Head Office ensures that if there is ever a problem, for example having trouble quoting, there is a support team behind you giving you the help needed. That provided extra comfort in my decision and put me at ease about joining Hire A Hubby.

I found the training that is provided to be very informative and helpful, not only with the practical exercises but also with the learning process of the computer programs for example, MYOB and the company intranet. So if you have the drive, you don’t mind getting dirty, you love a challenge and are looking for job satisfaction, Hire A Hubby is for you.

Maintenance Fitter – Steve Potts

Hi, my name is Steve Potts. I am the owner of a Hire A Hubby franchise in Brisbane Queensland. I have been a Hire A Hubby Metropolitan Franchisee for almost 4 years beginning in December 2002.

I have come from a trade background, being a qualified Maintenance Fitter. After completeing my apprenticeship in Victoria in 1991, I took the opportunity to move to QLD and worked in a few machine shops before taking up a position as Production Manager with a major Tapware Company. I spent approx ten years in this role before deciding that I was tired working hard for other people. I began looking around for something, that wasn’t going to cost me the earth to get into, but also a business that was going to give me a lifestyle choice as well as the opportunity to earn a comfortable living.

I am pleased to say that Hire A Hubby has provided this opportunity for me, and with the combination of this opportunity and my family’s hard work, we have a good solid business that continues to grow.

Being a Maintenance Fitter, I was lucky to be able to draw on those skills, as well as learn on the job in areas that I hadn’t had much experience in. I have also done renovations on my own home, which has helped.
