12 September 2018
September is International Prostate Cancer Awareness Month – a cause close to our hearts as it has affected a few of our very own hubbies. This year marks five years since Hire A Hubby first began supporting the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia (PCFA). We’re thrilled to announce that in that time we’ve raised $312,529 for the PCFA. Our hubbies donate $1 from every invoice.
So, why did we first get involved with the PCFA?
Did you know:
- In Australia, prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men?
- One in seven Aussie men will get prostate cancer?
- 20,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year?
- More men die of prostate cancer than women die of breast cancer?
- 3,500 men die of prostate cancer every year?
With this in mind, we recognised that educating Australia’s men and women about prostate cancer and the need to get tested was critical. The Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia is encouraging all men across Australia over 50 or over 40 with a family history to talk to their GP about their prostate health. Our goal is to help the PCFA increase the number of men being tested to ensure early detection and save lives.
So, how have we gone about this?
In 2013, we launched the ‘Man Van’ which tours the country, educating people and raising awareness of the need to get tested. We recognised that if we could prevent just one death from prostate cancer, then we should do it.
In recent years the ‘Man Van’ has visited Bunnings BBQs, golf days in Victoria and Queensland, and even the Supercars in Bathurst. The ‘Man Van’ most recently visited the Gold Coast for the Hire A Hubby conference. Stay tuned to see where we will be heading next, and come and say hello!
