How to Professionally Tile Around a Pool Area

Tiling around a pool is more than just a visual upgrade. When done correctly, it improves safety, boosts durability, and enhances the overall look of your outdoor space. If you’re wondering how to tile around a pool like a professional, this guide will walk you through the key steps, material choices, and best practices to get it right the first time.

Choose the Best Tiles for Pool Surrounds

Not all tiles are suitable for poolside areas. The best tiles for pool surround spaces are slip-resistant, water-resistant, and able to handle harsh outdoor conditions. Here are a few popular choices:

  • Porcelain tiles: Dense, durable, and available in non-slip finishes
  • Natural stone (like travertine or granite): Stylish and long-lasting, but often requires sealing
  • Glass mosaics: Eye-catching and water-friendly, best used as a feature or in waterline areas

Avoid glazed tiles or indoor ceramics, which can become dangerously slippery when wet. Always check the slip rating before buying, especially for areas where bare feet and splashing water are common.

If you’re after inspiration, check out our guide on grout colouring ideas to add a subtle contrast or blend your tiles seamlessly.

Preparing the Area

Before laying any tile, the base needs to be clean, level, and waterproofed. Here’s what you should do:

  1. Clean the surface: Remove dirt, dust, and any loose material from the slab or screed.
  2. Check for drainage: Ensure there’s a slight fall away from the pool to prevent pooling water.
  3. Apply waterproofing: Use a clear waterproofing coating to protect the substrate and extend the life of the tiling.
  4. Mark the layout: Use string lines or chalk to plan your tile pattern and minimise visible cuts.

It’s also worth double-checking that the slab or screed underneath has adequately cured. Rushing into tiling before the base is ready can lead to lifting, cracks, or hollow spots later on.

Take your time at this stage, it’s worth it.

Tiling Around the Pool

Once the area is prepared, it’s time to start laying tiles:

  • Begin from the centre of your planned layout and work outward
  • Use a high-quality tile adhesive suited to outdoor and wet area applications
  • Lay tiles with consistent spacing and always check for level as you go
  • Back-butter the tiles for extra grip in areas exposed to high moisture

Pay special attention to the pool coping and the edging around the pool, as this area experiences the most wear and exposure. Select coping tiles designed specifically for pool surrounds, as they are shaped to sit comfortably and securely on the edge.

Allow for movement joints around the pool edge to prevent cracking. Once the adhesive is set, apply grout in your chosen colour. Don’t forget to check out our tips on the drummy tiles fixing guide in case you need to repair or replace hollow-sounding tiles later.

Finishing Touches Matter

When everything is grouted and cured, finish off with the final details. Seal your grout if needed, and inspect all joints. If the caulking around the pool is cracked or mouldy, follow our tips to replace mouldy caulking for a watertight, professional finish.

You may also want to pressure wash the surrounding area or install edging trims to protect corners and improve the finish. Don’t forget to clean up adhesive spills before they set, and take a final walkaround to check for uneven tiles or missed grout lines.
