Colour plays a vital role in the world. It has the ability to sway our thinking, perception and reactions in both positive and negative ways. For instance, red usually represents danger. It is also used at traffic lights to stop cars, while green can have the opposite effect and often associated with nature, health and growth.
But what colours should you use for your home?
Don’t be dismayed by the amount of choice out there. If you don’t have anything in mind, it is always good to start back at basics. There are seven main colours which make up the paint spectrum. These are red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet. With these colours in mind, you should be able to eliminate the few colours you don’t like.

Take lead from your home
If you are still struggling, take a look at your existing home furnishings. Draw inspiration from the colours found around the home. Look at cushions, pictures as well as patterns.
Go big or go small
If you want to make a space feel bigger, the general rule is to keep to whites or light hues. Darker colours close up spaces and create a cosier atmosphere.
2023 Pantone Colour of the Year
The Pantone Colour Institute, the global authority on colour, has recently declared Viva Magenta 18-1750 to be the Pantone Colour of the Year.
“In this age of technology, we look to draw inspiration from nature and what is real. PANTONE 18-1750 Viva Magenta descends from the red family, and is inspired by the red of cochineal, one of the most precious dyes belonging to the natural dye family as well as one of the strongest and brightest the world has known.”
Leatrice Eiseman – Executive Director, Pantone Color Institute
Get your home painted in Viva Magenta
If you are in the process of painting your home, consider introducing Viva Magenta. It’s warm and lustrous vigour can lift any area of the home. Make it pop against pure whites and accessorise the home with elements and shades of this hue.
Hire A Hubby can help you by cleaning all surface areas, taping edges for a sharp finish and securing drop sheets. Our Hubbies have the professional experience with paint applications, including patch up and repair work and clean up.
Do your homework!
Whether you choose to paint your home in bold shades like Viva Magenta or stick to neutral colours, make sure you have the right hue and type of paint for your area.
You may already know the colour you want but make sure you do your homework and collect enough colour samples and cards from your local hardware store. Colours can change under lighting conditions and some paints have added chemicals to make them more hard wearing or contain mould guard. Get a more accurate representation of the true colour by taking home examples and tester pots.
From matt, mid-sheen or silk to eggshell, satin and gloss – there are different paint finishes suited to specific jobs. Matt paint absorbs light rather than reflecting it. This will allow for tiny flaws in your wall to go unnoticed, whereas satin or eggshell paint can show up brush or roller marks more easily. It is a lot more complex than simply picking out a colour!
