Starting the New Year by doing some basic home maintenance jobs might be the best investment you’ll ever make. Spending just a day or two of your holidays attending to a few handyman jobs will mean you can spend your weekends throughout the year doing something you’d rather do.
To kick-start 2014, we thought we’d offer you our top five must-do home maintenance jobs for the New Year.
Give your air con filter a clean
We’re now one month into summer, but many of you may have forgotten to clean your air con filter meaning it mightn’t be working as efficiently as it could be. Refer to the manual for the best way to clean it but often it will only involve vacuuming or scrubbing it in soapy water.
Clean your deck and walls
Cleaning your deck and walls are must do jobs every year. A high pressure cleaner is the perfect tool to take away the pain but before you do so, read everything you need to know about using pressure cleaners here.
Regrout bathroom tiles
Have you tried every possible way of cleaning your grout – scrubbing and bleaching – yet they still look discoloured and mouldy? One of the best ways to spruce up your shower is to ensure the tile grout sparkles, and regrouting is the best way to do it!
Servicing taps
Have you noticed your taps have become increasingly harder to turn off? Maybe you’ve noticed a leak? Both of these signs indicate the washer, o-ring or the jumper valve aren’t working properly. It’s reasonably simple to fix if you’ve got the right tools, and replacing all of these parts while the tap is disassembled is usually best to ensure no problems throughout the year.
Clear out the garage
There is a reason why “garage” shares a similar spelling to “garbage”. It is a breeding ground for all of those boxes, old furniture items and things you’ll never use again. Get off to a good start this year by clearing it, hosing, pressure cleaning or sweeping the floor, and then only putting back what you need. You may find storage boxes or cabinets useful.
Now, some of you may be thinking these jobs aren’t as simple as they sound. And you’re right. Sometimes it’s best to leave them to the experts.
